Loathe: Alexa Chung

Alexa Chung, stupid celebrities, fashion blogs

While I am generally anti-celebrity, there are many that I like, or at least tolerate. They tend to fit into two categories: the ones who are genuinely talented in a respectable field (reality television does not count), or have in some way contributed something extremely positive to the world, and the ones who aren’t too annoying and generally don’t cause offense. Alexa Chung used to fit into the latter category, while I have never been particularly impressed by her, I haven’t found much fault with her either. Until last week.

She was interviewed for Vogue UK, and here are her thoughts on bloggers:

“Blogs are ridiculous; they’re just mood boards – unless you are Tavi.”

Alexa Chung, stupid celebrities, fashion blogs

Alexa, you are entitled to your own opinion, but this quote demonstrates that you are clearly an idiot. An uneducated idiot. Here’s why:

  1. Not ALL blogs are “just mood boards.” Have you read Business of Fashion? On the Runway? A BLOG curated by? Because last time I checked, those blogs ARE NOT mood boards.
  2. Blogs are NOT ridiculous. They have become one of the most influential forms of media. I am sure Miss Chung can probably attribute some of her fame to the coverage she has received on blogs. Don’t bit the hand that feeds you, Alexa.
  3. Tavi’s blog IS mostly just moodboards. Ok, I really, really, really try not to insult other bloggers, it is just a little policy of mine, there are plenty of other poeple that merit insults. But I have to say, I unsubscribed from Tavi’s blog a few months ago because I couldn’t find any interesting content that was worth reading. There were too many boring moodboards. (No offense Tavi, but your blog just isn’t my thing…)

So perhaps Alexa Chung should actually LOOK at some blogs before she makes sweeping statements about blogs in general, and make herself out to be a complete idiot. Or maybe that is exactly what she is, and I just hadn’t noticed yet.

Thanks to Fashion Foie Gras for tweeting about this and posting the image of the quote above. Alexa Chung image from here.

She is famous for having ratty, yet glamorous hair, and super skinny legs. On the positive side, she IS very stylish. What are your thoughts on her line with Madewell?

  • Anonymous

Yes, she is quite stylish, although her Madewell collection was a bit
boring. nice looks, but the garments themselves were really nothing
    interesting.

  • http://www.imtheitgirl.com/ anya

I thought it was really great (chic and super wearable) but I doubt she designed any of it.

  • Anonymous

Yes, super wearable. But I’d go somewhere cheaper for a high waisted hot pant.

    1) Loved that you used you that photo. Excellently demonstrates my feelings regarding this joke of an It-Girl

    2) Since you have no issue with cultural stereotypes (and which is another one of the many reasons I continue to read your blog), I’m going to say something I hope doesn’t offend others; for an English woman, don’t you think she’d have better posture? Have you seen her in photos? The way that chick stands is so damn annoying it kills me. Like bitch, you are donning a Chanel suit and a Birkin, stand up straight and own it.

    3) She isn’t funny. On any level.

    4) I think she’s naturally skinny, but could gain maybe 15-20 pounds and look super gorgeous. I know that sounds a bit harsh, and I don’t think shes anorexic, but the girl is sticks and bones. Have you seen her legs?

    5) @im_the_it_girl:disqus shes stylish, but idk, nothing too special to me. Though I do admit I wouldn’t complain if I got the opportunity to raid her closet.

    6) @alexandrasuhnerisenberg:disqus agreed on your point about blogs. that was a terribly asinine and ignorant comment to make about a new form of media that has literally made you famous simply because of the way you look and dress.

So I think that ends my rant (at least I hope!).

Also, I wanted to know what your thoughts are on the increasing trend of fashion magazines doing everything to please their advertisers, to the point where we are seeing this on a month-to-month basis:

http://fashionista.com/2011/05/cover-wars-continue-guccis-spring-collection-lands-50-covers/I believe you’ve discussed this in the past, but it just seems that maintaing any sort of objectivity as a fashion publication is becoming increasingly less subtle (and/or difficult). I mean, when every major fashion publication is putting your spring collection on their cover, people notice and def. know its not a coincidence. And I don’t necessarily find fault with the brands because when given the opportunity to market your collections in such a way, it would almost be dumb of them not to. And huge reason is because as brands in the consumer product industry, they need to sell, sell, sell, and thats fine. They are in the business of selling products, not ideas, or stories, or whatever you want to call it. However, as fashion journalists, where is their journalistic integrity? I know, harsh, but I am starting to trust less people who are a part of the industry to provide me facts about designers and trends (besides a few fashion columinists, but those few and far between). P.S.I am sure you did not miss the ridiculous tone of the Fashionista article (as well as the comments), with the blogger/”fashion writer” seeing no problem with gucci’s collection on the cover of 50 plus competitive magazines? I tried to make a similar comment when they covered Prada doing the same thing for their S/S 2011 collection, and they deleted it, while everyone continued to praise all the pretty little dresses and so forth. I love fashion, but god do the people in it drive me crazy! Rant number 2 done.

Based on your initial Twitter comment, and reading it on the surface, I agreed with you. But you see, this isn’t coming from someone who has a real appreciation for blogs, though. Tavi is an industry girl, so it’ s only ‘correct’ to exclude Tavi from the equation. She got a pass. And besides, I’ve never taken Alexa’s column seriously. It’s just the musings of a socialite, really.

I just don’t understand negativity towards any kind of creative output. The fact that people are creating should be commended, not antagonized. Who cares if a blog is just a mood board? If that type of creative outlet suits you, read it. If not, don’t! But insulting anyone’s creativity just seems so backwards to me. If you have something specific to say (constructively) about the WAY in which people create or blog or whatever you want to call it, that’s a different story, but being negative without being constructive is way more useless and ridiculous than any mood board out there.

I don’t pay too much attention to her but, honestly, what’s her claim to fame? Why is she such a fashion/style/coolness icon? Maybe it’s my age showing (crabby at 43?) but some of these young chics that are deemed so cool ultimately seem kind of bland and vacuous to me.

I don’t know what the hype is all about when it comes to her, really. lord.

  • Anonymous

I think she hosted some TV show in the UK. And she dresses reasonably well and doesn’t get photographed being a drunk idiot, or release sex tapes, so I presume she is somewhat respectable. I guess she is famous for that.@alexa_chung:twitter

  • Anonymous

Yes, you have a point and I agree that if someone wants to be negative about a particular type of creative output, then they need to do so by critiquing it properly (explaining why it isn’t good) rather than classing all versions of a particular type of creative activity (in this case, blogging) as ridiculous. She sucks!

  • Anonymous

How is Tavi an industry girl, she doesn’t work in the indsutry, aside from the work she does through her blog. I don’t think she deserves to be classed any differently from other bloggers, aside to say she is younger and more successful than most.

I’ve written about this before, here is the link. http://searchingforstyle.com/archives/4856/ This isn’t new, magazines’ content is 90% advertisers content, they need the ads to survive, and the big brands can demand a certain amount of covers and content in the magazine, in exchange for their hefty ad buys. Most people in the magazine world can’t be trusted, and that is what is nice about blogs and some online magazines, they don’t depend as much on ad sales so they can say what they think. Same with newspapers, whose ad sales come primarily from non-fashion ad sales.

Thank you! Alexa Chung is completely boring and I don’t see why so many people think she’s inspiring. I don’t particularly love her style, and she always has this blank look on her face. She looks disheveled and empty all the time. Blogs aren’t ridiculous; her 15 minutes of fame is.

  • Ruby

Ugh, thank God! I thought I was the only one who found Alexa Chung to be intensely boring.

don’t really care about her one way or the other, but I’m under the impression part of AC’s popularity came from being lauded on many fashion blogs. Do not bite the hand that feeds you.

amen, sister. Re: ” I am sure Miss Chung can probably attribute some of her fame to the coverage she has received on blogs” — I would even say that her catapult to style icon status is due almost 100% to her popularity among fashion and style bloggers.

  • Eve

Also, I just realized that she lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and is most certainly an uber-chic/high-end hipster (a rare form indeed), so maybe her comment about bloggers was her moment of irony, since hipsters seem to have a serious preoccupation with this rhetorical device? Regardless, my feelings for her remain the same.

She’s too dumb to make a comment like that… I wonder if she even knows how to surf the net… Fashion bloggers are way cooler than celebrities!

    Yes very much true!
