Loathe: David Beckham Bodywear

David Beckham's Emporio Armani campaign. Apparently sales on the product doubled after this ad. I'll bet Armani isn't so thrilled about Beckham's decision to launch underwear...

Another day…another celebrity fashion collection. This time it is David Beckham launching a collection of men’s underwear. He is working with his partner Simon Fuller (responsible for many other atrocities, amongst them the Victoria Beckham fashion collection and American Idol) to develop the line to ensure that Beckham continues to earn revenue after he retires as a soccer player. Here is a quote from Fuller that sort of makes me want to puke.

“As David’s career changes, and his playing days near an end, we will have the necessary time to really focus on the development of our business,” said Fuller. “David and I have a number of ambitious and exciting ideas in development across a broad range of categories. The next 10 years will see David evolve into being recognized, not just as an iconic sports figure, but also as an important entrepreneur.” (WWD)

Is this ad equally bad, or worse, than the fact that the Beckhams have launched a "his and her duo" fragrance called Intimately Beckham?

So basically what Fuller is saying is that there is no chance we can expect the Beckhams to perhaps disappear with their millions and retire, or simply slow down. No, we are going to have their bags, faces, intelligent quotes and now underwear shoved down our throats for at least another ten years. While I don’t find it horrific to see David Beckham IN his underwear (however NOT his wife and her fake tits and sharp face), I really can’t stand the fact that those two are constantly scheming up the next way to get themselves into the public eye, and make more money. I’d like to think that if I had that type of cash, I’d spend more time with my kids and just enjoy life. Wouldn’t you? Or do you get so damn greedy when you are a celebrity that you just need need need more?

P.S. I don’t want to be called a hypocrite for liking Bjorn Borg‘s underwear line but saying David’s sucks. So I guess I officially need to say Bjorn Borg’s underwear is also no good now, even though their collections have the coolest prints and most fun colours and generally look awesome, unlike what I expect Beckham’s line will be.
