It appears that Sarah Jessica Parker and Halston Heritage are terminating their relationship (she was appointed president in 2010.) There has not been an official announcement, but WWD has reported on this story as well as several other websites. It is rare that I get good news about celebrities in fashion, so this made me very happy. I’ve written many times before about how much I hated the idea of SJP being involved in such an iconic American fashion company (read my rants here and here.)
I am not surprised that things didn’t work out, she had nothing to bring to the table. She may be a “fashion icon” but that does not make her a chief creative officer of a fashion brand. Aside from wearing the clothes, and endorsing the brand, I don’t see what she would have to offer.
This is a victory for fashion designers of the world. SJP’s involvement in Halston (a celebrity appointed as president and chief creative officer) was one of the first of its kind, and now that it hasn’t worked, I am sure other brands will hesitate to take similar steps. I can only hope and pray that brands will learn that trained designers are the best people for creative roles, and that this is the beginning of the end of celebrities in fashion. Sadly, I think this wonderful news will not have as big an impact as it should. But that isn’t stopping me from celebrating!
