Chanel Haute Couture Fall Winter 2012

The Chanel show started with a lot of boring suits and dresses. I guess this is a big part of Chanel’s couture business, but I don’t see why we need to see so many of them. There were way too many non-descript suits and separates that weren’t worth sending down the catwalk. In fact, aside from a few beautiful shapes and detailing, this show was rather disappointing. Very few pieces were “show-y,” and the rest weren’t outstanding examples of perfect, classic tailoring or elegant evening dresses. Instead, it all felt very… blah. But of course, I am sure Karl knows what he is doing. That’s probably what the Russians, or the Chinese, or the Arabs want, and I guess they are the ones paying his salary right now.

I love…

fluttery sleeves.

a dramatic dress shape, what a great bodice.

the amazing, delicate detailing on the ruffles of the skirt.

I loathe…

Paris, haute couture, catwalk, runway show, fall 2012, Chanel, karl lagerfeld,

these boring check suits and dresses. This looks like the kind of thing you’d pay $200 for in a store.

what looks like a costume from a period film. Alexa Chung might be able to pull this off, but anyone else would look like they were stuck in a fairytale.

that this fabric looks like something you’d see in the fairy/Halloween costume aisle at Walmart.

too many boring dresses.

I’ve really not been feeling Chanel for quite a few seasons now.  I usually struggle to find even one piece that feels fresh or relevant.
Plus, those sparkly tights… ick.  If it makes runway models’ legs look thick, it’s not a good look.

Me too. I’m over Chanel right now, although I’ll still take one of their bags, please.

See, I can’t even get behind their bags.  They are so outrageously overpriced, even in the realm of designer accessories.  £3,000 for a machine-sewn leather bag is truly outrageous.

Good point. Its Hermes all the way, then.

Exactly!  Old school techniques are worth paying for.
