Loathe: Agyness Deyn for Dr. Martens

Agyness Deyn modeling the highly unattractive pajama one-piece from her Dr. Martens collaboration.

Well here’s another model/brand collaboration which is best described as nausea-inducing. I am a huge fan of Dr. Martens, but I’ve been getting a lot of press releases from them lately about “projects” with Agyness Deyn, which has put me off them. First of all, I don’t know why any brand, especially one with a cool history like Dr. Martens, would want to collaborate with a model who is essentially yesterday’s news. Secondly, the press release sounds utterly lame. I’ve done a bit of decoding:

“Taking inspiration from both the brand and Aggy’s own personal heritage, (Aggy’s personal heritage?!?! She used to work in a fish’n'chips shop!) the pieces have been influenced by popular cultural references from music, film, TV and style (WHAT popular cultural references? I loathe releases that make vague statements like this. BE SPECIFIC.) Agyness worked closely with the Dr. Martens creative team (definition: she brought in some heinous pieces from her wardrobe, and the design team interpreted them to make this ugly collection), designing pieces that merge a grunge aesthetic with modern styling, quality prints, and bright colour pops. (I think what they meant to say is a lazy aesthetic with hipster styling, heinous prints, and blinding colours.)

From left to right: a sweater that looks like something you’d avoid in a charity shop, those dreaded one piece pajamas, and an unflattering dress in an even more unflattering colour.

According to The Cut, Aggy describes the collection as having “a very sexy vibe but not too provocative.” Last time I checked, looking like a homeless granny is not sexy in any way. Also, I think it is a bit hypocritical to describe this collection as bringing “together two British icons” yet it is inspired by grunge? There is NOTHING British about grunge. So, who’s buying the plaid onesie that looks like a really ugly pair of one-piece pajamas?

From left to right: a gross pink printed bomber jacket, the most unflattering skirt (I guess this is the “grunge” inspiration), and shoes that make you look fat.

p.s. Remember when there was talk of an Agyness Deyn modeling comeback? Thank GOD that never materialized!

    This should be illegal.

Right? By the way, what is up with ugly “charity shop style” sweater and shirts being all over again? Have we come to the point that fashion must resuscitate every bad idea of the twentieth century?

The ugly “charity shop” designs are what happens when you get a really badly dressed model to “design” for a big brand.

How is it that Marc Jacobs was lauded as brilliant for his equally shabby designs (for the Grunge years) and Aggie is persecuted for a style that is undeniably Aggie (and perfectly befitting with Docs)?

In my opinion, it is because Marc Jacobs did it right at the time that grunge was a huge subculture, and the irony of doing $4,000 “grunge” dresses made it interesting. When someone does something the first time, it can be interesting. When someone regurgitate something when it is no longer relevant, then it loses its appeal.
