Marios Schwab Spring Summer 2013

Marios Schwab‘s show was a combination of stunning cocktail dresses and nipple or crotch-baring looks that were frankly scary. Almost everything in this show could have been a love or a loathe, because there was nothing lukewarm. I want to love this brand (I went to school with him and I feel bad about the whole Halston scenario) and I am really pleased this is a vast improvement on last season. If I were a buyer, I’d easily be able to find some gorgeous dresses to fill my store, and I’d completely ignore the monstrosities shown alongside them.

I love…

elegant draping and strong structure, two things Schwab is good at.

a nice mix of sheer lace and pleats over nude.

dresses draped in jewels.

I loathe…

when designer dresses look like they have been made of black tinsel.

WAY too much underwear on show.

a hideous monstrosity of a dress that almost ruined this show for me.

I really like the way Marios talks about his line and inspiration. I think he’s a one to watch, I like his latest collection and especially this one. My favorite looks was actually the first one of your ‘loathe’ looks, I thought it was something interesting and for me it didn’t look that costumy :) I would love to intern in his studio someday :))
You studied with him? Something spicy to share from behind the scenes? :))

He was in the year below me, and he designed Jonathon Saunder’s graduate collection (Jonathon was a print designer, so he was assigned a fashion designer to design his clothes.) I remember Marios was dating someone powerful, I believe it was a guy form Dazed, so they had access to media coverage and models that no one else did. But he was, and still is, quite talented. I just feel he has lost his way a little, the past few seasons. He seemed quite nice, too.

Good for him to have someone at Dazed :D
It’s like that at CSM? I thought everybody (no matter what they specialised in) created their own collections. Do all Fashion Print students get a Fashion Womenswear student to design their clothes? I thought it wasn’t that concentrated.. You make me not choose CSM for that, I wouldn’t design anybody else’s collection :D

Well, the print designer’s are there to learn print and textiles, they can’t be expected to learn all the techniques of print, AND how to make and sew clothes + execution. Normally the second year print students have a first year student (or group of students) design their collections. I suppose if you are a print student and you were dying to design your own clothes, too, then they would let you.

(Btw, this is relevant to the MA, not the BA.)

Yes, this is what surprises me actually, because there’s nothing said about this on their website, I thought it was more straight-forward :) But I guess it’s part of their success as well.

Yes, print designers need to learn to work with fashion designers.

funny, i actually love all the ones you loathe! :) well, i love the whole collection anyway. His last 3 seasons have been extraordinary, one thing i don’t understand is why he’s still showing in london, there is only attention to print designers nowadays, specially the most uninteresting ones (see Mary K)…

I think he’d get lost in NYC or Paris. And I just don’t think his stuff is as good as it used to be.
