Proenza Schouler Spring Summer 2013

This is another one of those brands I just can’t understand. Season after season, Proenza Schouler continues to confuse me. Is it punk? Is it lady like? Is it classic? Is is tacky? Is it luxury? Does it fit? Or is it supposed to fit badly? Are the fabrics cheap? Or are they supposed to look that way? Who knows. I’m perplexed that this brand gets the exposure and acclaim that they do.

red patent punched leather with black seams. But why does the coat need to be so big? It is one size too big, too small to be oversized, and just right to be unflattering.

a boxy, unflattering sleeveless jacket in a hideous colour palette. Once again, the the hype around this brand confuses me.

    I really liked the print dresses too, with the eyelet/grommet thing going on in the skirt. And they do seem like the chosen ones, don’t they? I think you and others pointed out how good Narciso Rodriguez is, how come he doesn’t get as much press anymore? I feel like I hear about Proenza Schouler a lot, yet I don’t always get what they do. I feel the same way about Rodarte, so I always love hearing what both you and Cathy Horyn of the NY Times have to say about their work!

    I think Narciso isn’t the “hot cool thing” anymore, which is probably why he doesn’t get much press. But it is sad, he is in between the big names like Calvin and Donna, yet “above” Proenza and Wang. It is almost a difficult position to be in.
    And by the way, Horyn REALLY pissed off Oscar de la Renta for calling him a hot dog. I am going to write about it in the next 2-3 days, its worth a commentary.
