Fashion Quote: Victoria Beckham and Designing

Victoria Beckham with an Hermès bag.

I’ve yet to find one single aspect of Victoria Beckham that I can remotely respect or appreciate, and this interview with her is no exception. Here she is, talking to T Magazine, about why she designs.

“I just wanted to create beautiful clothes, good quality clothes I wanted to wear myself,” she said. “And then I wanted to create handbags, because I couldn’t find the right handbag that I wanted to carry. Then I couldn’t find the right sunglasses, so I decided to make my own sunglasses.” (T Magazine.)

Victoria Backham carrying Hermès bags.

Really, Victoria?  You couldn’t find the right handbag? I thought you liked Hermès bags. I’ve seen a LOT of pictures of you carrying an Hermès bag. And when I googled “Victoria Beckham with Hermès bag”, over 3 million entries came up. And these images are just a few of the MANY that are on the web of you carrying Hermès bags. Apparently you have 100 Birkin bags. I am quite surprised that you bought 100 of the same bag, even though it wasn’t “right.” Even rich morons don’t waste that much money on things that aren’t “right.”

Victoria Beckham with more Hermès bags. P.S. Victoria, you are such a fashion icon. Not.

Here’s an idea: maybe you used to love buying Hermès bags but then realized you could make your own uglier, less worthy bags, under your own fashion label. Then your fans, who for some reason look up to a WAG with fake boobs who doesn’t eat and who pretends to be a fashion designer, will buy your bags, and line your already full pockets with more cash. Could that be the reason why you said this?

Or maybe I am wrong, and those Hermès bags just weren’t “right.”

If the latter is the case, why don’t you donate all of your Hermès bags to a charity and they can auction them and use the money for a good cause? Wouldn’t that be wonderful? I might gain an ounce of respect for you if you did something like that. You won’t be needing them anyway, since they aren’t “right.”

Jeez, would you get over already? Does her success really bother you that much? Isn’t there anyone new you could pour shit on, this is getting really annoying!

  • alexandrasuhnerisenberg

Her success bothers me as it is part of a bigger picture: that the public AND the fashion industry actually respects people like her. But yes, I do talk about her a lot, and I have tried to cut down, but this one ridiculous quote was irresistible!

  • Rajan Sami

It would have been infinitely better if she’d said: “Well, I’d done making a ton of money copying a whole bunch of clothing, so why not bags and sunglasses as well.” That sort of honesty would get my respect. And for T (yes I know it’s the adwhore) not to call her on her actual quote is shameful, given that they’re an NYT publication. Where is Cathy Horyn when you need her? Oh yes, writing another fan letter to Raf Simons no doubt.

  • lu’quemia

she does work the birkin like nobody’s business though. really her and the olsen twins are the only people, i think, who really make it work.

  • alexandrasuhnerisenberg

Yes, I’m saddened by the number of supposedly respectable publications actually feature her in a positive light. I have way more respect for someone like Jessica Simpson, who just makes crap for teens and doesn’t even pretend to be a designer.

  • alexandrasuhnerisenberg

Sorry, I disagree. I don’t think she works the Birkin like nobody’s business. In fact, I have never seen her in an outfit where she doesn’t look like a fake fashion wannabee.

  • Beatrice17

I wish her nothing bad, but I agree that the absurdly lavish spending and endless flashing of cliché status symbols casts a sad light over her other efforts. It’s pure Imeldo Marcos, and I’ve never understood her allure (I remember she was voted Woman of the Year by a British women’s mag even before she designed anything). Posh and Becks were both famous from an early age, which is never healthy, and I guess this is just two ordinary people’s reaction to having absurd amounts of money and having earned it by playing football and appearing in ads. It would suit them to get over it by now and start being role models in other ways than by spending, advertising and designing new things to spend on and advertise for.

  • alexandrasuhnerisenberg

Yes – I wish more celebrities would look to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as examples – at least they use their wealth and fame for a good cause.

  • Sienna

And at least Jessica Simpson is ok with not becoming anorexically thin 1 week after having a child.

  • Sienna

Agreed. I have no problems supporting Jolie and Pitt because they do much good for society. Victoria Beckam is pretention and excess personified.

  • Sienna

Oh and further to Victoria Beckham’s fashionized anorexia – I read about her being spotted dining with Katie Holmes in L.A. Both skinny celebrity designers were giggling while sharing 1 wrap and some lettuce leaves – lead to a sudden urge to hurl.

  • alexandrasuhnerisenberg

    They are pathetic.
