Balenciaga Spring Summer 2014

I’m not surprised that this collection isn’t as impressive as Alexander Wang’s first Balenciaga show, but I am also very glad that it wasn’t a huge pile of crap (let’s face it… that first show could have been a one off.) Wang has done a great job of combining his sporty, cool signature with some of the dramatic, beautiful shapes of the Balenciaga archive. But I’d say this collection in general wasn’t refined enough, it felt a little too casual and not special enough for this majestic brand. That said, I didn’t actually loathe anything, I just felt I could have been more impressed.

I love…

how Alexander Wang has done a really good job of combining his aesthetic and sportiness with the curves and shapes of old Balenciaga.

when off-the-shoulder looks cool and effortless.

how the volume of this dress is on the back (these mirrors sure are useful! That makes up for the fact that the models are so small in the photos.)

I agree. I found three different things happening in this collection: 1) nods to the original house codes of cristobal; 2) some Ghesquiere influences; and 3) Wang’s own street-inflected sportswear vibe, which did make it feel a little disjointed look to look but I suppose in due time, he will able to synthesize the three more effortlessly. I found the simple, less-belabored evening type looks to be the most potent of the lot.

Those mirrors! I love this runway. Good that he’s exploring the essence of Balenciaga. Doesn’t have to blow you off your feet every collection but so long as he keeps to the spirit of the house, it works for me.
