Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2014

There is so much wrong with this Marc Jacobs show and it is five o’clock in the morning and I just feel like crying. I cannot understand why the whole entire fashion industry doesn’t completely write him off. Aside from a few nice full length evening pieces, this was a gross mish mash of period, pirate blouse, and bermuda shorts, punctuate with non-logo logo sweatshirts. It is a hideous collection and kind of makes me want to give up fashion. If he is allowed to get away with this unscathed, then the industry truly has lost its integrity. I’m too scared to read any reviews in fear of finding praise.

I love…

a beautiful printed dress.

another nice full length dress – they seem to be the only thing in this show that’s isn’t disgusting.

I loathe…

that Marc Jacobs can get away with crap like this.

that it is look eleven and we are still seeing tacky versions of period costumes made from upholstery.

that I’m speechless.

when period costumes, pirate blouses and bermuda shorts meet.

logo sweatshirts without the logo. (Actually, I loathe logo sweatshirts full stop.) Did I mention this show makes me feel like crying?

that I’m now fully sobbing.

Aside for Donna Karan and a few looks from Alexander Wang, I loathed this NYFW, and Marc most of all. London, please be good!

    Agree!

I’ve always thought that Marc Jacobs is one of the most overrated designers ever. He is just no good!!! I can’t see the appeal, and I can’t understand why everyone is always kinda swooning over his crappy collections, and waiting impatiently for his show, and why his show is always ‘the big deal’ of NYFW. He has no aesthetics, his clothes are never flattering, he has no personality as a designer, he always shows really crappy things in collections that seem so random to me…

When you look at something done by Ghesquiere, for instance, you know it’s Ghesquiere; same thing happens to Alber Elbaz in Lanvin, or Galliano when he was still in Dior, or of course Donatella Versace (like it or not, I personally hate Versace, but slutinness is their thing). They have a really strong identity, and you can tell their pieces apart in a second if you know about fashion. Other designers may seem more ‘random’ (Miuccia comes to mind) but you can also tell that a certain collection was designed by them (Prada is quite quirky, for instance, and there are certain elements that are always there). But for Marc Jacobs…well, the way to know if it’s something designed by him would be…does it look extremely unflattering? Does it look crappy and quite cheap? Does it have hideous footwear? Yes? Then it’s probably Marc Jacobs (although it could be Rodarte or Saint Laurent, because lately they are gravitating towards the crap as well).

I have to idea why he is considered the great American designer of our day.

And his footwear is awful. I’ve never seen a shoe from a Marc Jacobs collection or Louis Vuitton that I liked.

Agree on everything! Except the shoes, I do like Marc Jacobs’ little ballerina flats. But that’s hardly design innovation. He is so overrated.

  • Fashion Agony

Wait till you see how these ugly jackets end up in next year’s hottest trend! Uggh!
I like Marc Jacobs bags, but other than that I don’t know what he’s doing in fashion and how anyone can like this!

Ugh – and Forever 21 will make versions of the same jacket. How depressing.

One of the worst things about this is that he will probably have a huge buy from all the major department stores, when other brands with a better product are being ignored because of a lack of “prestige”, or whatever you want to call it. Albeit there’ll probably be many changes before it sees the sales floor at Bergdorf’s, it still bastardizes the amazing work that other designers are doing, and losing out on their big break as a result. *sigh…*

Yup, that’s how the fashion industry works! But you can all have an impact by not buying anything from a brand like this!
