So I’ve decided to take two weeks off! Actually, I should be more specific, I am taking two weeks off Searching for Style, because I have a lot of work to do for The Sleep Shirt before Pre Fall sales begin in January, I’m preparing for something big and exciting happening in early 2014 (more on that soon!) and I actually want to spend some time relaxing (in a chalet at Mount Baker, in case you’re wondering.) So I’ve prepared two posts featuring some of my favourite and/or most popular and/or most hated posts of 2013. Check in next week for Part 2.
Press Release of the Month: Designer Concealed Carry
Since we have just passed the one year anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting, I thought it would be fitting to begin with a piece from my newest column, Press Release of the Month. The featured item was a collection of handbags that allow you to easily carry and access your handgun. because duh, we all need to carry a handgun, right? Wrong. This is a very sad example of how messed up gun control laws are in the US.
5 Reasons Why I Want to be a Minimalist
I know I’ve been going on a lot about minimalism, but since I’ve discovered this movement my life has changed so dramatically. It is similar to the way I felt when I quit smoking, once you know it is out of your life, you don’t look back. Yes, I am sure I will want to buy clothes again, but recently I have had no desire whatsoever to shop. The Christmas presents I am giving out are all things I have bought second hand or meaningful gifts that didn’t cost very much. I haven’t bought a single item of clothing in months (actually I lie, I bought a gorgeous pair of boots. And I will wear them a ton.) And I’ve been emptying my house of everything unnecessary. That’s not to say I won’t buy clothes again, but when I do, it will be things that are considered. Items I really need, or items that will truly bring joy to my life. Let’s be honest with each other, so much of what we buy, especially around the holidays, has no real purpose. If you haven’t already checked out The Minimalists, I strongly suggest you do. They have changed my life.
Thoughts on Bangladesh and Cheap Clothes
While I’m on the subject of minimalism and shopping less, I’d like to remind you all about the tragedy that happened in Bangladesh this year. There are a few ways to really, truly put a stop to these appalling working conditions, and pressuring the retailers to set up “regulations” is not a good way to start. We ned to buy less, buy only what we need, and stop demanding cheap fashion. If you decide you are only going to buy $40 t-shirts that are made in factories that treat there workers well, then I can guarantee you that factories will start to treat their workers well. It’s called supply and demand, and we can control where the supply comes from.
5 Reasons Why I Support the Canadian Seal Hunt
And since we are on the subject of local, I thought it would be important to re-post a link to my article on the Canadian seal hunt. A major development happened recently, where the World Trade Federation decided to uphold an European Union ban on importing seal products, even though they realized that it was a breach of fair trade. You might not like the idea of the seal hunt, but I urge you to read my article to learn a little bit more about it. Seals populations are as strong as they have ever been, and the most disturbing thing about the result of this court case is that the decision was based on public moral outrage. If we start banning things because people “don’t like it” then how come the EU allows people to stuff geese so full with food so that their liver explodes – so they can make foie gras? Or they let bulls die because of some tradition of letting them run through the streets in a city in Spain? It’s hypocrisy at its worst.
5 Favourite Fall Winter 2013 Shows
Ok, let’s lighten things up a bit. Now that we are at the end of the fall winter fashion season, we can reflect back on which collections ended having the biggest impact. I still stand by my choices but I won’t deny that they weren’t all as influential as I had hoped.
7 Ways to Make a Good Complaint
And lastly, something practical. If you need some tips when returning unwanted Christmas presents, or making a fuss over disappointing holiday service, then these tips will help you out.
