Jonathan Saunders Fall 2014

It was interesting to review Jonathan Saunders after Mary Katrantzou, because these two designers have a lot in common. Both began as print designers. Both attempted to move away from being known for bright coloured prints. Katrantzou is in the middle of that transition, and it remains to be seen whether she will successfully become a “designer” instead of a “print designer.”

Saunders, on the other hand, has somehow managed to keep afloat, even though those breathtaking prints he was first known for, are in distant memory. I remember his first collection (his graduate collection – because I graduated with him) and it was amazing. But everyone said he wasn’t a great clothing designer, and I am still inclined to agree. His collections are rarely impressive, and to be honest, I am really surprised he has managed to keep going this long.

I love…

a giant sweater with a matching scarf. I’d love to wear this, except please get rid of the gross skirt.

I loathe…

this unflattering, oversized coat and colours that do not go well together.

an outfit that only a seventy year old would wear.

terrible proportions. Terrible.

the worst combination of print and pattern I have seen in a long time.

an get up you’d see in a club at 3am on a Monday morning…

when your outfit looks like you got drunk and went impulse shopping in a thrift store.

My reaction to this was, “are you fucking kidding me?” Seriously, I feel like I’m being pranked. It’s so aggressively ugly, from the hair+makeup, through the colour combinations, to those AWFUL tights (deep tan pantyhose??? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!). Compare it to Balenciaga, which, yes, while very different, had oversized silhouettes, an androgynous aesthetic and a mix of textures and fabrics in a way that looked chic, polished, creative and new. This just looks studenty and inept.

Ugh sorry to go on and on! I just really hated this!
