Dries Van Noten Spring Summer 2011

Dries Van Noten makes clothing and shoes women can wear. Real women, who don’t totter around in stilettos all day and who are normal sizes like 6 and 8 and 12. This collection, like most Dries shows, featured some beautiful tailoring, a surprising use of colour, and some stunning prints. I hate to use the old cliche of “classic with a twist” but this is essentially what Dries does, classic with an edgy, Belgian twist.

I love…

a perfectly cut silver coat with a rolled up sleeve.

a great jacket, and I love how it is belted and the sleeves are scrunched up.

the oriental-inspired floral prints in this collection.

the degradé colours on this jacket.

that most designers would put this sheer shift dress over a thong and bare breasts, but Dries puts it over a shirt dress.

a classic skirt "with a twist."

how Dries can make evening wear look so elegant, fluid, and effortless.

I loathe…

iridescent sequined leggings.
