You have to love a tagline like this, of course from the New York Post:
“$500 socks, world’s most expensive, has holes and can not be washed”
The socks they are referring to are the Rodarte socks pictured above, which are hand-croched and cannot be washed or drycleaned, only spot cleaned. I have my eye on a pair of Rodarte shoes at the moment, but even at 50% off, they will still be in the 4 digits with tax. I have to ask myself, what the hell are these girls doing making such expensive clothing? Ok, the shoes are worth it becasue they are stunning and demosntrate a huge amount of handwork, but $500 socks? It is absolutely ridiculous.
I love luxury and am happy to spend money on something that is expensive because of the work, craftmanship, and the materials invovled, but this product also has to have a purpose. A bag I will use hundreds of times, shoes that fit perfectly, a coat that keeps you warm and looks good for many years, these are products that are worth spending money on. But $500 socks seem silly and almost unethical. Also, no one bothered to mention that those socks are ugly. They look like someone with poor crochet skills took all their ugly-coloured yarn remnants and made up a pair of tacky socks, because there wasn’t enough yarn left for a sweater.
The video below shows some New Yorkers’ reaction to the socks. It is quite funny, and a good reminder that sometimes the fashion world is a bit insane.
