Tom Ford Spring Summer 2011: the pantsuits are a bit tacky, but the glamourous 70's dresses are great.
As most of you will probably remember, Tom Ford secretly showed his Spring Summer 2011 collection to a private audience in September. Rather than invite all of the media and post the images online in the following hours, he invited a selected group of journalists to view the collection, but not before they sworn to secrecy about the looks. Nothing was to be released for a few more months. He explained “I want fashion to be fun again, like it was in the ’60s. You couldn’t wait to get the clothes and put them on, and I think we’ve lost that.”
Although I feel he succeeded in creating quite a lot of hype around his collection, I also felt that it was quite likely the whole collection would end up being a disappointment. Tom Ford is a fantastic designer, but he is no Alexander McQueen. It is not like we were expecting armadillo shoes and alien models. Ford makes clothes women can wear, and I was pretty sure that his collection of evening gowns would be beautiful, but not exciting enough to warrant being kept under wraps for months after the catwalk shows.
Vogue US published a preview of the collection in the December issue, featuring a group of models and Tom Ford himself, shot by Steven Meisel. My verdict? Some nice pieces, but really not that exciting nor groundbreaking. People will buy it because they love him, not because it is unique, as most of the pieces look quite similar to the stuff you can get from many other designer brands.

The dégradé pink dress Karen Elson is wearing (right) looks very interesting, but the rest are certainly not getting me excited.
