Marchesa Fall Winter 2010

I am always pretty harsh on any brand that has only become famous because the founders are famous, or involved with someone famous (and this time it happens to be someone very rich too, which is quite convenient.) Marchesa is the dream company of many women: make pretty evening dresses. Its not a collection, as they don’t really go together, but I guess they don’t really need to since they are evening, cocktail, and red carpet dresses. Marchesa is the go-to for that sort of thing, if you think you are too young for Oscar de la Renta, but frankly, at least Oscar has some credibility, not just a rich boyfriend. There are some nice pieces in this collection, but I think any two girls who had a lot of money at their disposable, and access to Hollywood’s A-listers would be able to make the same pretty dresses.

I Love…

the mini-bustle on this dress, and the shape of the cap sleeves. It is very pretty, but really, nothing that special.

this tuxedo jacket turned dress. And the shooting stars around the neck are very sexy.

those shooting stars again the skin. Reminds me of Chanel jewelry.

I Loathe…

a strapless sheath dress with a bunch of layers of expensive materials randomly draped all over it, so that the wearer looks like they caught and twisted in a pile of red bridal fabric.

a bunch of cotton balls thrown together and tied with a black bow. Stupid.

that Marchesa is trying to be Elie Saab. But with a much cheaper iridescent fabric.

that this looks like a fashion student's creation. I mean, seriously, is there anything here that makes this special? Its just a floor length gown with a ruffle sash.

that this dress is absolutely ridiculous and looks like a ruffle experimentation gone wrong and then totally overdone to try and compensate for the fact that it was a really bad idea to start with.
