Not to mention how synthetics are treated, but also how the material is created. They are petroleum based, and I think we can all agree that 'harvesting' petroleum is devestating to heath, environment and habitats. (and as you mentioned the refined product is linked to serious health concerns including ADD, male infertility, increased testosterone in women and a reduction in the number of males being born each year.)
I'm with your Mom...it's not just about going green. (I'm a bit of an over zelous green advocate, who eats meat and endorses fur, believes in compassion and being socially responsible- perhaps having the appearance of being more than slightly conflicted.) I really think people need to consider how green thier choices really are....if bamboo flooring means that old growth teak forests are ripped out to accomadate a rapid growing tree, then shipped (on a polluting ship) across the planet, isn't harvesting local wood the greener choice? PETA is great... for making sure that domestic animals aren't abused that cattle aren't pumped full of growth hormone, and that chickens aren't raised and slaughtered in a horrible fashion. But lets be real PETA- I think the bib-tail deer of Alberta would rather offer one up for a coat and live free in thier formerly pristine, uncancerous environment than have you running around in vegan friendly plastic shoes...made by human slaves...I think you get my point.
