Vancouver Fashion Week

On Saturday afternoon I attended a fashion show with Jason. He told me that Paul Hardy was a Canadian designer worth seeing, so we went to the Vancouver Fashion Week venue to see his show.

Jason was right, the Paul Hardy  show was worth seeing. The whole collection was in whites and creams, with shoes badly spray painted in white (in a cool way.) I am sure his commercial collection has more colour, but this looked great on the catwalk. Interesting drapes, shapes, and nice fits. A relief to find another interesting Canadian designer, in Canada. Thanks to Lyndi for sorting the guest list.

Images from Paul Hardy, excuse the poor photos, I am trying to get better at this.

I promised myself I would try and keep this blog positive, but I have to comment on the show we saw before Paul Hardy. This was accidental, the show before was running late, so we caught two shows on Saturday. Ginger Martini is apparently from Toronto, I don’t know much about the brand, but it is exactly the reason why Canadian fashion has a poor reputation. This was a mix of tacky evening wear and embellished yoga pants, no thought put to the styling, and not even commendable as a student collection. I just can’t understand how this designer could afford to put on a show, who would buy this type of clothing? She came out wearing a black tracksuit, if the designer isn’t willing to brave her own outfits, she needs to go back to the drawing board. It was SAD.

Who wear this?

Who wear this?

Well Stated Alex. I completely agree! And you looked effortlessly flawless at the show. You never disappoint!

Haha, nice captions for those last 2 photos…Paul Hardy is solid but by far the best looks you posted are you and Jason in the first photo.

So I guess you’re not interested in my 2010 catalogue?
You’re right, you don’t know much about my brand. They aren’t yoga pants and I wasn’t wearing a track suit. I was wearing one of my outfits and I do brave my own designs most places I go. (along with plenty of other people) For the record, I do put thought into my styling for my shows as well as for my shoots. Maybe you need some bigger glasses next time to catch the detail. Its unfortunate that you feel Canadian fashion has a poor reputation. Designers like Paul Hardy, Janet T Planet, David Dixon and countless others have been rocking runways and shops around the world for years. Maybe if you came out to more than 2 shows in November, you would have seen something that interested you. I have a strong following in Toronto as well as Asia to answer your question about who would wear my work, and I survive quite nicely, so don’t worry about how I finance my shows, there will be plenty more to come, I’ll make sure I send you an invite.
I doubt you’ll actually approve the posting so probably just you (if you’ve even made it this far into it) will be reading it. But thanks for reviewing me, I’m looking forward to hearing what you think about new new website, launching early summer : )

I was going to reply to your email (I am traveling at the moment) but you’ve obviously seen the post, so there’s no need. I think we can agree to disagree, I don’t think the collection I saw was up to standard for a runway, but that is my (strong) opinion, and I know that not everyone agrees with me. I am no Suzy Menkes or Cathy Horyn, but I have a pretty respectable background, and I have enough knowledge to critique fashion collections.
With regards to Paul Hardy and other Canadian designers, I do have a lot of positive things to say, as well as negative. I loved Paul Hardy‘s work (which I mentioned in the blog post about you…) , and am a big fan of Jason Matlo‘s collections. I also wrote some very favourable reviews about Montreal Fashion Week, as well as some negative ones. And I recently mentioned that I am going to be covering more Canadian designers in my blog, as there are a few, Obakki and Nixxi, that I want to write about in more detail, because they are great. I do think that Canadian fashion has a bad reputation, however, there are some excellent designers here that are doing some great work, not to mention Canadians abroad doing fantastic collections (Mark Fast and Erdem to name a few.)
I am glad to hear that you are surviving, it is tough to make money as a small brand in the fashion industry, so best of luck to you.

seriously? You going to claim to have street creditability? WTF are you wearing?!?!?

Your coat looks unfitted. You should have been wearing pants to cover those knees!!! O.O

Why is you bag so big??? do you have hair products and a hairdryer in that bag? I think so since your hair is so flat and no volume… Please fix yourself before you comment on other fashion designers

    thank you :)

I don’t claim to have street credibilty, but being a graduate of the prestigious Central Saint Martins MA in Fashion Design, as well as a designer at Sonia Rykiel and Burberry, and working as a trend forecaster for many of the top agencies in the world gives me the skills to critique fashion collections.

Frankly, your comment barely deserves a response, however I’ll just say that the coat you’ve insulted (which was “unfitted” or “oversized”, that’s a trend by the way) was a best seller and sold out in one week at Dover Street Market. But I highly doubt you have any idea what Dover Street Market is.

Firstly, I am not aware of Mrs Suhner claiming to have “creditability”. Is this some banking/financial term?
Other than that it appears to me her pedigree stands her in good stead to pass comment on what, in this instance, would appear to illustrate the vagaries of Canadian fashion. Yourself?
Whilst I can imagine the self-satisfied yelps emenating from behind your computer screen as you typed the above, in future please allow yourself the indulgence of one of the many free online language/syntax checkers as frankly your missive reads like a script out-take from ‘Bruno’.
With respect, perhaps fair comment on your own veracity as an arbiter of style, let alone jurisdiction to pass judgement on the appearance or opinions of the author of this blog?
    Thank YOU.
