When I first heard about Liam Gallagher’s Pretty Green clothing collection, I was quite excited. I am not a fan of Oasis (his band, for the young readers) and I don’t like Liam’s cocky attitude, but I thought his idea was really good. They launched this promo video for the collection, and I was sold on the collection.
The famous line from the video was Liam’s strong feelings about skinny jeans. “I’m not into the skinny look — these skinny things. That’s what I’m here for — to fucking get rid of that shit.”
Why was it a good idea? Firstly, the original Oasis fan is probably in his 30′s and 40′s now has a bit of cash. He doesn’t buy luxury brands, but he doesn’t want cheap fast fashion. He wants something in the middle, good quality, but not too fashion forward. He is too old to wear the super skinny jeans. And he admires Liam Gallagher. So the collection sounded brilliant to me.
But then it launched. The hype around the video was so exciting, they rushed to get something on the shop floor, and they started with t-shirts, which were very boring… Then the rest of the collection came out, which was also very boring and not any different from what already exists on the market (Ben Sherman and Fred Perry do the job just fine, thanks.) I was expecting something with a story, some detail, some refinement. But Pretty Green was just boring Brit pop menswear.
Apparently it is selling well in the UK, I guess its because of the fan base, so I wasn’t that surprised to hear that. But the news today was that he is going to launch a womenswear collection, and that does surprise me. As fond as I am of my (short) time living in Manchester hanging out with Brit Pop boys, I definitely would not want to dress like them. And I also wouldn’t want to dress like Liam Gallagher’s Canadian wife, Nicole Appleton from the very boring manufactured girl pop band, All Saints. I don’t know where else his inspiration would come from, lets face it, he isn’t much of a fashionista. My suggestion to Liam is, stick with the menswear, try and do something interesting with it, and be chuffed* if it lasts more than another two seasons.
*chuffed means pleased
