Mary Katrantzou Spring Summer 2011

This is a beautiful collection, Mary Katrantzou‘s handle and technique with digital printing and print placement on garments is phenomenal. This season she used jewelry and fringe embellishment to complement the prints, and it worked beautifully. But despite a fantastic collection, I feel that this brand is stagnant. She got the fashion world’s attention with her gorgeous prints, but she needs to prove that she isn’t a one-trick pony by introducing something new. I hope she doesn’t go the route of Jonathon Saunders, who has managed to sustain a business for several years, but who was always best known for his complex digital prints which he now rarely uses in his collection. I still believe he has not ever managed to top his graduate collection, which was stunning beyond words.

(By the way, Hermes, you should hire Mary Katrantzou to design some scarves for you!)

I love…

a breathtaking print, beautifully placed on this dress.

the jewelry, the colours, the sleeves, the tassels, this outfit is young yet conservative.

the way the print placement creates a fantastic figure.

using the prints, again, to make the waist look small. And by the way, that print is gorgeous.

I loathe…

the square shoulder panels, they ruin the silhouette of this dress.

The extra long fringing on Look 2 is unnecessary, it's unsightly and distracting.

Also Looks 2 and 3 are reminiscent of Balenciaga. Wonder what Ghesquiere will show this season?
