Met Costume Institute Gala 2012

I really had to edit down this post, originally I had 50 dresses to comment on, but that would have been too long for this blog, so I cut out all of the looks that I didn’t feel very strongly about. Here are the best and worst outfits from the ball last night.

I love…

Met ball, fashion, celebrities, red carpet, evening wear, anna wintour

Anna Wintour in this Schiaparelli-esque Prada dress. The gold lobser looks amazing. (Not a huge fan of Miuccia's outfit, but then again, I expect her to be unconventional.)

Fashion Quote: Natalia Vodianova on Being Skinny

So by now you’ve all heard about Natalia Vodianova sticking her foot in her mouth by saying “It’s better to skinny than fat.” a few weeks ago. Although this is controversial, it does ring true in the fashion industry, whether you like it or not. But of course people were going to make a fuss.

Natalia Vodianova, fashion quote, skinny, fat

Maybe Natalia is lying down because she is so hungry?

The problem was not this ridiculous quote, it was her defense of it.

“Our industry is scrutinized for giving false image and criteria of beauty and provoking eating disorders however there are other industries that might be even more to blame like food industry that is constantly reinventing ways of pushing food on us.”

Yes, wow, imagine that. The food industry wants to sell us food. Does that mean the food industry is to blame for the obesity epidemic? Partially. But let’s face it, the food industry is not using emaciated fifteen year olds to sell their product, like fashion. And hold on! She goes on.

Natalia Vodianova, models, fashion, fashion quote, skinny, fat

Skinny might be considered "better", but protruding ribs are not.

“I wish I did say at the time, that I assume there is very little Anorexia or Bulimia issues in countries like Africa, China and Russia today!”

I looked up a bit about eating disorders and the Western World, and found this: “One of the reported explanations for the development of eating disorders is the social pressure resulting from the standards of female beauty imposed by modern industrial society or Western culture.” (source) So basically, the fashion industry is partially to blame for eating disorders. But what was Vodianova trying to get at with her ditzy quote? I am presuming she was referring to the fact that those countries are poorer than the Western World (well, not really, China is rich, but I digress…)  but so what? They should be “happy” that they don’t have eating disorders? Or we should look to those countries to find out why they aren’t as fat as the Western World? Is it a good thing they have less food, but less eating disorders? Who knows what she was trying to get at. My advice? She should just shut up and look pretty.

Beauty Brief: The Mini Nipper

OPI, nails, mini nipper, manicure, beauty brief
It is that time of year again, when our toe nails suddenly need a lot of maintenance. (By the way, can I just share with you my nails painting tip? If you drive to work, get into the car in the morning, put your seatbelt on, put your keys into the ignition, and release the emergency brake, then paint your nails. They dry while you drive! This works best if you have a long commute, like me. This also works if you go to work on a train, but you have to deal with dirty looks.)

Anyway, back to cuticles. OPI‘s Mini Nipper is a fantastic cuticle clipper and also deals with the dreaded hangnail. This is going to be my go-to for summer, since I don’t have time to get my nails done every few weeks. OPI’s mini nipper has contoured cutting edge, a retractable spring, and handles really well (I’ve tried it. I know.) They’d also like us to get excited about this limited edition purple version, although I don’t care what colour it is. In this case, I’m more interested in efficiency, and if it does what it says on the box. This product most definitely does.

Available at salons and spas for $21.95.

One Year Ago on Searching for Style

burberry, childrenswear, overpriced

A Burberry kids dress for $1450. Not only is that a total rip off, but I actually think it is unethical to charge this amount for a child's dress.

I thought this article on my doubts about Lanvin’s childrenswear was interesting to repost, since there’s been some recent news reports about the growth in the luxury childrenswear market. It is something I simply cannot understand! Why would you spend hundreds of dollars on an item of clothing that is probably going to get dirty, drooled on, and will only fit for a few months? It is ridiculous. Here’s an article about my doubt’s about Lanvin’s childrenswear.

5 Tips on Buying Bridesmaid Dresses

bridesmaid, wedding, dresses, fashion lists, fashion advice

These are gorgeous, simply dresses that would be so pretty for a bridesmaid. And of course you don't need to get the designer version, you can have your own ones made. From left to right, Carven, Issa, and Acne.

I don’t have any personal experience being a bridesmaid, or buying bridesmaid dresses (that was a formality my wedding did not have) but I’ve worked in a bridal store and have seen how desperately tragic bridesmaid dresses can be. I have a friend who has a closet full of hideous bridesmaid dresses (I am pretty sure 27 Dresseswas based on her) and I am always flabbergasted that her “friends” expected her to wear those hideous monstrosities, AND made her pay for them! So, because of her, the request of one of my readers, and any future victims of heinous bridesmaid dresses, I have decided to compile a few tips.

bridesmaid, wedding, dresses, fashion lists, fashion advice

Here are a few dresses for more informal weddings. Imagine the striped one with flat gladiator sandals, on a beach? Amazing! From left to right: Chinti and Parker, Marc Jacobs, and Jil Sander.

1. Consider different body types. The problem with a lot of the ugly bridesmaid dresses I’ve seen is that they don’t suit all the girls in the party. Do you really want to stick one of your supposedly best friends (or sisters!) in a dress shape she’d never get caught dead in otherwise? No. Even if this means they won’t all be in the same dress, you’d prefer a happy bridal party than knowing your friends are going to resent you for the rest of their lives (or seek revenge. See point 5.)
